October meeting minutes

Pierre was away in Washington DC talking to Congress -  about ecology, we think. Avril hosted the meeting with her usual grace and humour.

The Club members who were present thanked Judy, Ross and Kahsia for all the hard work they put into the Fall Fair photography section.  Kahsia, in turn, thanked all the club volunteers who helped over the weekend. It was very successful and had more photo entries than other years. Simon was one of the judges, putting in 10 hours at least, and many…

She has been on the Island for 8 days and is married to the new minister of the United Church.

Minutes for May meeting

Shows:   Bernadette is showing mixed media work about the clear-cut logging that happened last year near Beddis Road, a subject close to her heart.

A bench to commemorate Bob Rogers was installed on the dock by the float plane shelter in Ganges. A small ceremony took place on the dock on Saturday and Photoclub members and Bob's uncle ate and drank and took photos of each other sitting on the bench. This bench will be much enjoyed by people who can now wait for their plane…

A bench for Bob

Bob Rogers' family wanted a memorial bench to be installed somewhere on Salt Spring. The perfect spot has been found, down on the dock in Ganges where the sea-planes come and go. Bob used to love taking photos of these planes and now fellow photographers and travellers will have a place to sit in the sun while waiting for their plane ride or contemplating the perfect shot. Wendy has, of course, been instrumental in making this happen and it is going to be installed today, Thursday 9th, at…

Minutes for October meeting

Avril stood in for Pierre and opened the meeting. The group sat in an informal circle as the educational part of the meeting was given over to a discussion about the future direction of the Club.

Marcia Jeanne's friend Olivia (from France) was a guest at the meeting and she told me afterwards that listening to the discussion was good practice for her English comprehension.

Bernadette has two pieces showing at Artspring as part of the Painters Guild's…

Minutes for September meeting

Pierre opened the meeting by welcoming our newest member, Merv Anderson.

Since the summer some people are not getting Club emails and Doug suggested looking in our spam boxes and, if they are there, adding them to favorites so that they are re-classified. Wendy will chat with Ning about this problem.

Doug show at the library continues until Sept. 29th.

What kind of camera?

At last night's club meeting, many of us were curious about David Ellingsen's camera, settings, etc.

It reminding me of this article: https://digital-photography-school.com/why-your-camera-gear-doesnt-matter/

That said, David's comments about how he uses his camera helped me.

August minutes

Pierre introduced the new team who will help shape the Club in the future.

Simon Henson

Larry Citra

Maggie Vancik

Roger Brooks

Maureen Milburn

Ellen Vesterdal

Justene Tedder

Plus returning executive members:

Pat Page

Kahsia Hartwell

Wendy Rosier

Anna McColm

This group will infuse some new energy and direction into the Club. Feedback from club members indicates that people would like more interactive educational activities (workshops, classes, small field trips etc.) and maybe a schedule of educational opportunities ahead of time so that people can plan to attend.

The Victoria Camera Club has an external speaker every month and are willing to share their list of speakers so we can participate, at a cost of $5 a person. The club has funds to cover this at the moment. This would require using the  Zoom format (which has worked so well during this Pandemic).

Club meetings will resume in October, giving this new group time to work out their ideas for new directions.

Some people are cautious about in person meetings (because of health issues) and others are ready and able to jump back in. Maybe in person meetings and Zoom meetings can co-exist. Something to talk about.

Maureen has offered to look into a monthly newsletter with, possibly, more coverage than the website offers such as emails, using facebook etc.

Avril would like to see an improved use of the website: more posts, more comments, more helpful critiquing. We might need a refresher course to remind us how to give constructive feedback.

Doug has a show about Covid in September at the library -  in the Community Program Room. He will give a talk on September 7th at Noon. This will be previously unseen material, not the triptychs we have seen on the website.

Photosynthesis has a virtual show coming up, starting on August 31st. Some club members also belong to this photography group.

There is no theme yet for the photography challenge in October but when that is decided it will be communicated to everyone.
