Membership:

Wayne Stadler is our newest member. Wayne is a seasoned photographer, and we are excited to have him with us. Please see his uploaded images already on the SS Photography  website

There are now 56 members and 2 of these members are honorary members. Curt proposes that we develop criteria for honorary memberships and members in memoriam. If you are interested in helping to develop criteria for this, please contact Curt.

There was discussion that Wendy had been involved in a prior endeavour regarding these designations before Covid and we should ask her if there is a current document of what had been decided.

Announcements / Upcoming Events:

Hub roasters Café: Julie Bowen has the May space with images of birds. Please do check this out! Sylvia Beech is being featured in July. John de Bruyn had taken the September spot but now cannot;  Ellen Vesterdal has offered to fill in for him.

The October show being organized by Claudia has 9 interested contributors thus far. Claudia asks that those planning on showing submit samples in July

BC Yukon Speaker Series:

May 29^th is the Annual Celebration of BC Photography show

June 5 – Larry Louie has been rescheduled and will be discussing Documentary Photography

Pierre let us know that at 2pm on Saturday May 16, at the United Church on Hereford, he will be presenting “The Birds and the Bees”, sharing his photography of birds and insects, and discussing the negative impacts of pesticide use. Everything you would want to know about the Birds and the Bees but were afraid to ask.

Pierre also informed us of a local event, “Biodiversity Extravaganza!” May 21-24 at the Salt Spring Conservancy at 265 Blackburn Rd.  A Live Electron microscope will be available, an interesting way to get into macro photography.

From the Conservancy Newsletter: “Elaine will introduce the world of small-life biodiversity that can be investigated with microscopes including a portable SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) she will bring over from UVIC. This is a unique opportunity for Salt Spring Islanders to explore our biodiversity with some essential tools of biological research.”

Gwen asked for a volunteer who would be willing to organize the Christmas social in December. Ellen Vesterdal has offered to take this on, with help from others.

We are ready!

Newswires have gone out and signs are up.

We are still waiting on payment from 2 participants

Artist binder needs a photo and artist background info.

For sitters – it is important to read the binder (5min) which will answer questions about what you do and how to greet the people,  and to express interest in how they found out about the event.

There is cash in the box – When an image sells, PLEASE take note of the person who sold it and the details of the purchaser. There is a form to complete in the binder. Credit cards and cash are preferred. Cheques are accepted from local islanders only.

Judy emphasized that for photos that are sold to a buyer who lives off island, and needs to take the photo with them right away,  the photographer needs to be informed promptly of the sale and removal from the gallery. This is so they know why their work is missing from the wall, and also to give them an opportunity to replace the item sold with a new item.

Anna indicated the importance of mentioning the People’s Choice Award to our visitors. She suggests that it increases time visitors spend contemplating the photographs. All the images will have a number on their tag, and the visitors will vote by number on their entry. Salt Spring Inn has offered a $50 gift card for the award.

Seth is looking for coverage for 1 shift for May 28 for 10am-1pm. He is sending an email to look for a person to take the shift. He thanked the people who readily took on a shift already, and commented that the process itself was smooth.
