December 9, 2015

Opening: Wow, what a crowd... it must have been the food... tell them there will be food and they will come... Wonderful... there were about 50 people enjoying the Christmas cheer and endless goodies...  Thanks to all who brought and thanks to all those who added to the festive evening... chat & munch time was a great opportunity to meet some new folks...

New Members: Colton Prevost and Kim Stewart welcome to the group... look forward to seeing you participating in the shows and activities... welcome... ps.  we don’t always have that many treats...

Monday Coffee it is at the long central table with all the really noisy friendly people, last seen in Santa hats, very strange... at the SaltSpring Inn... at 10’ish.... come on out and get to really “know” your fellow club members...

ArtSpring Lobby Show:  Jan 4 – 30th... This is a wonderful Island/Club event... it is our opportunity to brighten up the doldrums of winter on the Rock... and it is our time to Rock too... The show is of your favourite/Best/etc... the size is unlimited, the number is possibly 2 or 3 images...  The lobby is huge and lots of hanging room... So really strut your stuff...

For those of you new to the club and still now sure about participating in shows... this is a great introduction and it such fun to go to ArtSpring events and listen to the buzz... or show off your work... come on out a play with us...

Club Elections:  will be held early in the new year... so please think about how you can help the club, the best way to get the most out of any club is to get involved...  and we would like to see some new people stepping up to fill positions... talk to any of the executive and they will brief you on the expectations of time and effort...  In fact at the Jan meeting we will have a panel discussion about the various positions...

News Flash!!!  the Photo Club seasonal DVD is now showing in the Visitor’s Information Centre and getting rave reviews... from staff and visitors... well done all...

Wendy has said that she is finding it difficult to fulfill both the President and the DVD Producer roles... she would love some help with one or the other... She will train anyone wanting to learn how to do the DVD’s...  or she will gladly turn the presidency over to a willing volunteer so she can concentrate on the DVD’s...

Mini easels... Dave Bartel showed us some very cool little easels, great for countertop or table displays... he has the pattern for if anyone is capable with powertools and not losing their fingers ... contact Dave for more information

The Website... the website comments have been buzzing these days... lots of lovely nice comments and some very constructive/instructive ones... I would like to encourage all members to participate in the conversations... it is a great way to learn to look at things... look at image construction and composition... You can learn a great deal by listening, looking and asking questions... If you are interested in particular image ask about it... make a comment...   This is the 21st C Art Salon... participate...

Shows:

Fernwood Café: Photo Club’s Greetings to the Island... about 12 members contributed work to this show... sending beauty, colour, humour, spirituality, multi-cultural... it is lively, fun and very interesting... thanks all who participated... we are already booked for 2017...

Pemberton Holmes:  Presently Avril Kirby and Anna McColm are showing at PH

There is an opportunity for anyone to hang their work at PH... the space takes ten 16X20 images...  or smaller of course... or larger but feawer... The theme is SaltSpring Images is very loosely defined... if you are interested in showing here just email me... mcbenmore@saltspring.com and I will add you to the rotating team...

It’s a fun place to show... it helps to sell the island and the island atmosphere... hmmmmm????

Educational Bit:  our guest was Alane LaLonde, the 5 year director for Photosynthesis...  Alane discussed her work and how she viewed her images...  her works showed strong forms, strong shadows and lots & lots of colour...  Much of the work was done in Mexico, which of course provides lots of opportunity for colour and strong compositions...

Thanks Alane for your presentation and enlightening comments on how you work your magic...

Evening Show/Challenge:  the theme was festive, spiritual, glitz, holidays, Wendy’s whatever the word was that encompasses all the various festivals at this time of year....  Doug has posted the December show on the site...  as usual the show encompassed everything and every body... it went from Judy McPhee’s delicate ornaments to Avril’s Santa Club Monday Management Meeting over coffee... Bernadett’s candles spoke to another time and oh yes Marks miracle on Beaver Point Road... it was a great show...

Next Meeting:

Wednesday, January 13th, 2016

Harbour House… 7:00 pm  ???

The challenge: Our next meeting and slide show will be in First Month of the New Year 2016 so think in terms of...   New, Fresh, Rejuvenated, Original, Firsts, maybe even Resolutions - whatever else this time of year brings to mind.  Happy Shooting!

Editorial aside: If you have any comments, corrections or additions please feel free --- all help is welcome…

I would like to encourage all club members to take part in the conversations on the website --- they are interesting and endlessly informative…  Share your pictures with the club on the site – you know we all love to look at images and it would give us a chance to get to know a little bit about you …  let’s participate…

Thanks for your patience...

Cheers… MCB
