July 2024 Minutes & Newsletter
Minutes for July meeting:
Judy welcomed new members Roberta Martell (not present) and Liz Tevaarwerk (attending) to the Club.
Jo Berube is showing some of her photos at the Country Grocer Cafe for the month.
Howard Fry has a new portrait series showing at Mahon Hall. The opening night is July 12th and he's giving a talk on Sunday 14thth 2 - 3 pm.
The Sooke Fine Arts Show has 3 Salt Spring photographers showing work this year. Current Club member Seth Berkowitz, past member Kahsia Hartwell and Photosynthesis member Michael Hall. Seth recommended going to the show (Photography, Art and Sculpture) and mentioned that it was in an ice rink which has been transformed by all that great art. The opening night is July 26th at 7 pm.
Fall Fair:
Judy has a volunteer to help with the intake of photos on Tuesday, Sept 3rd but is looking for another helper. This shift will start at 5 pm.
She's still looking for people to help write comments on the photos on Thursday 5th, from Noon onwards. I did this last year and it was interesting and fun. The 3 judges will decide who gets first, second and third place in each category and will write comments for those images. The helpers' job is to write something positive for all the other photos in the category.
Volunteers will get a complimentary day pass for every 2 hours of work.
The Fall Fair website has been revamped and people can now sign up and pay for their entries online. You can also fill in your volunteer shift online but please let Judy know if you do this.
Potential Canadian Landscape Show Project:
There was some discussion about where to show the Canadian landscape photos if the Club goes ahead with this project. The library room where we meet does not charge for an exhibition and will take 15% of any sales. ArtSpring is cheaper than Mahon Hall and charges only $60 for the lobby. Seth mentioned that it is a strategic move to plan a lobby show at the same time an artist has a show in the Gallery as ArtSpring has to be open for that show. He has booked two weeks in April 2025 so that is a possible time for the club to use the lobby space.
The library has limited wall space so those photos could be 8" x 10" but ArtSpring has huge walls so we could print the same photos much larger so they could have more impact.
Claudia offered to write the blurbs on why Canada has such variable landscapes. She also mentioned talking to the school geography teachers and promoting a student field trip to see the photos and learn more about Canada.
CAPA (Canadian Association of Photographic Art):
Judy joined CAPA (Canadian Association of Photographic Art) for the Club and will post it on our website. We now have access to a roster of speakers (very useful for our Zoom meetings over the winter months) and connections with other photo clubs and competitions.
Older Photographic Equipment:
If anyone had older photographic equipment to get rid off there is, apparently, a man on Salt Spring called Micheal Gluss who buys everything.
The Evening’s Talk:
Chris Dixon gave a talk on his career in the framing business and some interesting topics came out of the post-talk discussion.
A conservation museum (acid-free) quality mat board will last longer than a mat that is non-acid-free. Best to use acid-free if you are selling work or wanting to preserve work.
Acid-free mats cost more. Non-acid-free will discolour your print.
If you want to keep a photo or piece of printing from a newspaper take a photograph of it and print and frame that because the original will not last.
For photographers selling framed and unframed copies of their photograph; An unframed photo should be at least half the cost of the framed one. We are not selling a frame but our original work as artists!
A Logan mat cutter is a reliable brand. A very sharp blade is the key to success and someone recommended buying them in bulk. This also requires precise cutting.
Opus' exhibition frames are good and reasonably priced and can be used over and over again as they are easy to dismantle. Opus in Victoria is near Value Village on Store Street.
The theme for next month's slideshow is 'Lines'.
Slideshow:
Many of the photos in the Canadian Landscape slideshow were not appropriate for the proposed project, which is going to have more focus on the geological landscape. Nice photos though! Pierre suggested we present our 10 best photos to the club and let the members choose (with Claudia's guidance) which ones would work best for the landscape project.
