January 09, 2013 - Minutes
OPENING REMARKS: well we were Jambo Jambo’d again… ( jambo means – greetings, sit down and be quiet - the Prez is going to speak of important things)… Curt expressed delight with the Club Members Annual Winter Show at ArtSpring… there are a good number of participants including many people new to showing. The quality of the work is wonderful… The club and its members have really grown over the past few years… not only in number but in their personal growth in photography… Well done all!!!
NEW MEMBERS: Wow!!! we are 108 members in this little club now… and it is great to see so many coming out to meetings, coffee klatches, shows and events --- Curt announced three new members: Lucia Gabber, Sean McIntyre and Karen Laidlaw – who joined us just tonight at the meeting… I think she came for the Community Theatre rehersal but joined us instead. Welcome all and the best way to enjoy this club and learn lots is to come out a play with us…
Annual Dues are due to Pat Page – ASAP - $15.00 made out to SaltSpring Photography Club… for a really good time…
There was a motion on the floor and seconded that the membership fee for dogs is $7.50 – But upon further consideration - if you are counting footprints it really should be $30.00 --- sorry Uri – we have changed the rules (government footprint Tax grab).

ELECTION OF EXECUTIVE (Conscription there of… )
Bob Davidson ran the Nominations with authourity and pizzazz – begging people to come forward – No volunteers were brave/crazy enough to step forward themselves or to volunteer their best friends who weren’t at the meeting… So by Acclamation the present slate was given the power to run the show for another year… So lets see where that takes us…
Prez…(Thinks he’s in Charge) Curt Firestone, Vice Prez… (Riding swamper for the Prez) Bob Rogers, PR (Power of the Media) Wendy Rosier, Treasurer (Power of the Money) Pat Page and Secretary (Power of the Minutes ) Margaret C. Benmore ( that’s me)…
Anyone else who would like to volunteer in helping with events and things just speak up --- we would love the company...
It is going to be a fun and busy year so come on out and participate.

Penny’s Pantry:
Penny’s is funky and very busy location offering space to our Club members. Drop in and check out the goodies (there is a theme here – everywhere/thing revolves around warm/cozy/hot drinks and goodies… oh well so be it). Good high traffic to see your work and believe me, people there do look at the work very carefully and talk about it …
Gallery of Fine Arts: nothing new to report --- but do check out the gallery there is always something on view… and it keeps you in the “Art” loop on SSI… done a gallery gallop lately --- there is wonderful things going on in all of the galleries and who knows they might give you shot of winter inspiration…
Lady Minto, and Harbour House Slideshows: Well the “ Winter/Festive “ show has been very popular with the patrons of Harbour House as always a great introduction to the island views. But at Lady Minto this season it did double duty as a healing instrument and distraction – I have had lots of people tell me how much they enjoyed it while they were waiting to be treated or tested... I think it has done a lot to relieve people’s flu misery – so good work all !!! Wendy Rosier is now looking for images that show “ Spring ” on the island… Took my first outdoor Snow Drop picture just yesterday… they are out down at Beddis - so Spring here… maybe a few more blasts of Winter, but Snow Drops = Spring…
Harbour House Wall Space: Avril Kirby is showing at Harbour House until Jan 30th so do drop by and see an beautiful collection of work by this wonderful photographer who has a great eye for images and a super sense of title… it is a wonderful show…
There is an opportunity for anyone interested in exhibiting their work at Harbour House (Lobby and Restaurant) they should contact Tanya at Harbour House for details and information
TJ Bean’s: if you are interested in showing in new venue for photographers please contact the manager… Dave Bartle announces in is Forum note that June, July, Oct and November are open at the moment… Thanks Dave for the heads up…
ArtSpring Winter Lobby Show: Jan 2-31 2013 - The presentation of the images as well as the images themselves are inspiring… Well done all that participated and also to Bob and his crew that hung the show… it is a wonderful display of the talent we have in the Club - Go See It !!!!!!
B.C. Museum: International Nature Photography Show… A reminder --- this is the Best of the Best in the world in nature photography and well worth the trip to Victoria.. It will be showing until April – but don’t put it off you may want to go more than once… it is Amazing, Beautiful, Stunning… those are the reviews by the Club members at the meeting…
UPCOMING EDUCATIONAL EVENTS:
Miksang Workshop on Jan12-13 is being coordinated by Bob Rogers -- this has been described as the Haiku of Photography. This workshop will be from 3-4:30 on Saturday and 10-4 pm Sunday at ArtSpring in the Bateman Gallery…. Come prepared to be amazed and inspired by a new way of looking at thing and thinking about Photography.
THIS EVENING’S EDUCATIONAL EVENT: Gregg Klassen – Club Member and Philosopher extraordinaire… what a wonderful evening full of surprises, ideas, and new ways of looking at things, thinking about things, and knitting the two together. Gregg did a wonderful presentation on his work and the roads that he travelled to reach such extraordinary results… it was inspiring and thought provoking …
Gregg mentioned the following photographers whose work he enjoys - they are well worth a web search: Freeman Patterson, Jerry Uelsmann and Jeff Wall (Vancouver School)
Thanks Gregg we are all looking forward to another dose in the future... it was sooo interesting and fun.. you did a great job...
EVENING’S MEMBER’S SLIDE SHOW – “ Motion” was the theme of the evening… and as usual Doug pulled our work together and made us look pretty darn good – if you ask me… Nice work all… it is always interesting to see how different people interpret the theme of the evening – this week " Motion" …. There was everything from gushing runoff, to reflections in the harbour, lots of lights blurring in wonderful ribbons of colour, there were kids and dogs in endless motion… Doug even presented a wonderful twisty granddaughter, Uri’s motorcycle captured the essence of motion in the chrome as well as the reflection of his VW Van – too cool… What a great show all – what fun to see so many perspectives of the theme…
NEXT MEETING:
Wed. Feb 13, 2013 (Happy New Valentines Day) ---
7-9 pm Portlock Portable…
The Next Educational Component: Mystery Night --- Still to be arranged - stay tuned.
The Next Slide theme: “ Constructed Photographs “ this refers to some concepts presented this evening by Gregg Klassen – he outlined 2 styles of Constructed Photograph…. The first you construct before you take the picture… you develop an plan, you stage it, you shoot it and then you go from there with it… The second type of Constructed Photograph is more post shoot – in that you stage components of it, shoot it and then knit it together into the final composition/image…
That, of course is, my gross simplification of what Gregg was saying… but I think it is generally the idea… Gregg if I don’t have it right please correct me in the notes following this… I don’t want to lead anyone astray… thanks… Anyway challenge yourself, stretch yourself… this could take you down a very interesting road…
Forward your 2 “ Constructed ” images to Doug McMillin djmcmouse@gmail.com as soon as possible and he again will do his magic…
SPECIAL NOTE:
As always if you find mistakes/omissions and such --- just speak up –post it for all to see in the comments area… it is totally unintentional and certainly not meant to offend anyone… all additions Welcome… Sometimes there is a slippage in memory and/or hearing… Happy New Year all --- it is going to be a wonderful one --- I just know it…
Cheers… MCB
Thanks Marg, and one small correction--my show at Harbour House is now down. But thanks for the post-plug anyway.
I know that the power of the pen is more powerful than the power of the voice.
