Photography Club Minutes

                                         October 8th 2014

The club met at its new location, the Crofton Room at the Harbour House. This room is secured until the end of 2015 at a discounted rate of $40 per session. For this meeting we had the works - carafes of coffee, hot water for tea, and a waiter appeared to take orders for beer and wine. However, the Club decided not to continue with this (the coffee service is an extra $10 per carafe) and, in future, members can buy their own drinks at the bar and bring them into the meeting. Or you could sneak in something from home under a coat!

Curt welcomed our newest member, Wendy Taylor. She wasn't at this meeting but is already posting photos on the website and, hopefully, can make it to the next meeting.

Doug Wahlsten gave us an update on the Nomination Situation. Wendy Rosier has agreed to stand as a candidate for the President. Curt is standing for the Education Co-ordinator position and Doug Wahlsten is standing for the Public relations position.

Chris Dixon, Marg Benmore and Pat Page are all continuing in their respective positions as Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Wendy Rosier is staying on as Webmaster. Yeah!

The club will be voting on these nominations at the November Meeting.

The Artspring lobby show (at no charge to the Club) is scheduled for January and will be hung on January 2nd. More details will be given nearer the time. Timmy's suggestion of a nude show was shot down! The Club is looking for a co-ordinator for this.

Wendy Rosier is hosting a Thank-You-To-Curt-For-Being-a-Great-President-For-4-Years party at her house on November 8th. It will start at 4.30 and is a potluck. An email will be coming with directions to Wendy's house.

Cliff Kelly gave us the Country Grocer Café Photo Show schedule (we have the walls every second month).Margaret Benmore is showing photos in November and Cliff Kelly is showing in January.

Avril Kirby is having a show at Harbour House for the month of November. She'll let us know if and when there will be an opening event.

At the November meeting the Executive will put forward a motion to increase our annual fees from $15 to $20. The club will vote on this at that time. We now have the cost of the room to deal with and we may need upgrades for the AV System.

The Salt Spring Artist Directory is an on-line directory where you can show your photography and provide links to your webpage etc. It costs $45 a year but a $30 deal is being offered to Club members if you sign up before the end of the year. Just tell Anthony that you're a member of the Photography Club. Judy McPhee, Bob Rogers and Elehna de Sousa have already signed on.

The Club challenge theme for November was discussed. Two themes emerged with fans of both. So....the theme is RAIN and if people would like to experiment with HDR (the other theme) with their rain photos they are encouraged to do so. This way both themes are covered. Apparently there are free 30-day programmes for HDR on line.

This Saturday is 'The World Wide Photo Walk' where everyone is invited to take a photo-focused walk in groups (for 2 hours) and submit 1 or 2 of their favorite shots from the walk for a contest. The winners of the local contest will go on to the World Wide contest where 4 winners will be announced. The Victoria location is Swan Lake and you have to register on line. Judy is interested in doing this and would like to know if anyone else is thinking of going.

For the Education part of the meeting Curt showed us the features of his Paintshop Pro x 5 programme. This is an inexpensive programme that is a competitor to Photoshop and costs around $80. There is a newer pro x 7 programme now available and if you already have the 5 you can up-grade to the 7 version for only $60.

Avril stood in for Doug this month and operated the slide-show; the subject was Portraits.

The meeting was adjourned and - a wonderful feature of our new set-up - nobody had to put away any chairs.
