Photo Club Minutes

March 14, 2018

Opening: Avril Kirby opened the meeting... about 25 folks came out to play... and learn about scanography from Janet Dwyer... a woman outstanding in her field...

The gathering was lovely full of chatter and laughter... always a good sign... it really sounded like a group of friends...

New Members: Jesse Freemont, Janet Hamilton

Festive Fernwood: Bruce McPhee has had a very successful run of his wonderful landscapes... even sold 5... congrats...

Mike Levy will be showing for March... treat yourself to a pastry and admire his work... always a pleasure and a lesson...

Country Grocer Café: Margaret C. Benmore... SaltSpring Goddesses return for an encore... until the end of March...

Ladysmith show... Jana won the “Unaltered Photography” category with her frozen rose portrait... well done Jana

Vancouver Island School of Art... Avril will be showing April 13, located on Quadra in Victoria

Electric Vehicles: Ann Mccolm is working with the island Electric Vehicles Group for an event June 23/24... it will be at the big barn at the Farmer’s Institute... she has posted a notice on our website... let’s get out there and support the Electric Vehicle people with some amazing images and little imagination...

She is looking for images of anything mobile and electric... bikes, cars, baby buggies and 3 wheeled scooters (they are sooooo cute) ...

Eclectic Visions 2018 (EV)... Jana Zachariou has been working on hard to produce the best EV yet... she has simplified, organized, booked and registered.... It is looking great with 29 people signed up for the show... She would appreciate the fees as quickly as possible in order to have an operating budget ... Send in your $$$’s to Jana as soon as you can... Looking forward to another amazing show...   If you need any further information about EV Jana has also posted the rules and dates on the website under Blogs...

Club DVD...   “Spring/Summer on SaltSpring”... everyone is invited to send Judy McPhee 10 images (landscape) she has posted the requirements and guidelines on the website... it is a fun project that brings a great deal of delight and relaxation to those who get to see it at the hospital... 3 screens are operating there (Emergency, Extended care and the Blood Station)... great Stress relief and passes waiting time in a beautiful way... well done Judy for producing them and to all who contribute too...

Educational Bit: our guest speaker was Janet Dwyer... She of Scanography fame... It was a fun and lively presentation with lots of questions and discussion... Janet shared in detail her process and working environment as well her growth over the years... Her shared enthusiasm for the whole process especially when it involves wrangling live critters on her scanner... Janet’s images are clean (she spends hours cleaning dust off the scanner)... Some of her images are gently disturbing with the juxtaposition of the materials in the image (bird skulls in flowers, frozen flowers)... Others are very simple, elegant and sophisticated... Great composition and colour ranges... Such variation and experimentation... She is definitely inspirational with her work... and is encouraging us all to play with the concept... explore the constructed composition in our photography... as she suggested next months challenge...

The April challenge: “Arrangements” inspired by Janet’s presentation you are challenged to produce an image... contrived with purpose... an arrangement or Still Life...

A Still Life: Inanimate subject matter selected and arranged, with special attention to the control of composition, story, lighting and such...     tell us a story with your image...   you can do it using a scanner or just use your camera...

Evening Show/Challenge: “ Shadows & Reflections

It was a great show... fun to see what other people do with the topic and the wide variation of interpretations... go to website to view the show... Doug has posted it in the Blog section...

This group will infuse some new energy and direction into the Club. Feedback from club members indicates that people would like more interactive educational activities (workshops, classes, small field trips etc.) and maybe a schedule of educational opportunities ahead of time so that people can plan to attend.

The Victoria Camera Club has an external speaker every month and are willing to share their list of speakers so we can participate, at a cost of $5 a person. The club has funds to cover this at the moment. This would require using the  Zoom format (which has worked so well during this Pandemic).

Club meetings will resume in October, giving this new group time to work out their ideas for new directions.

Some people are cautious about in person meetings (because of health issues) and others are ready and able to jump back in. Maybe in person meetings and Zoom meetings can co-exist. Something to talk about.

Maureen has offered to look into a monthly newsletter with, possibly, more coverage than the website offers such as emails, using facebook etc.

Avril would like to see an improved use of the website: more posts, more comments, more helpful critiquing. We might need a refresher course to remind us how to give constructive feedback.

Doug has a show about Covid in September at the library -  in the Community Program Room. He will give a talk on September 7th at Noon. This will be previously unseen material, not the triptychs we have seen on the website.

Photosynthesis has a virtual show coming up, starting on August 31st. Some club members also belong to this photography group.

There is no theme yet for the photography challenge in October but when that is decided it will be communicated to everyone.
