Jana Zachariou, updated information for The Eclectic Visions exhibit at Gallery 8

There are 19 people signed up and she expects that there will a total of 27 in all. She stated that the maximum size is 36 inches and that we must adhere to the guide lines of the gallery. No exceptions. Black frames is the preference as they are easier to group . Photos can be mounted on canvas, metal or acrylic. Deadline is the end of March for admissions. The show will be advertised.

Jana also gave a Pressentation on “Flowers”, one of her favorite things to photograph, besides landscapes.

One her very favorite places to visit to take the flower pictures is Butchart Gardens. This garden is 55 acres, and has been designated a Natural Historical Site of Canada in 2003. The gardens has over one million bedding plants and display flowers from all over the world from March to October, with the March of 2017 being an exception due to the cold and snow.

Jana likes to visit early in the morning and especially on rainy days as there are fewer people there. She feels that the flowers can change your perspective, as she isolates it, keeps it steady, and puts the focus on details. There is no use a macro lens or tripod. Black and white can transform the image.. RAW is her preferred mode of shooting so that she can work on the photo later and experiment with the details. She likes to shoot at high speed with the Aperture open at 2.8 to let the morning or evening light in. ISO is usually set at 100. Photo shop is preferred to get the black background and darken shadows. One tip Jana shared with the group, was that she likes to spray the flower to look as if it has just rained on it by putting Glycerin in the spray water. This makes the raindrops stand up for a nice shape. Minutes of the Salt Spring Island Photography Club March 8, 2017
