SSI PHOTO CLUB

April 10, 2013  - Minutes

OPENING REMARKS: Curt Firestone (el Presidente) is back from South and again has things hopping… thanks Curt we need a wrangler…  Though things did move along in his absence so he can feel free to take a break…

NEW MEMBERS:  Pat Page - reported that we have between 85-90 renewals in membership for this new year…  which is like 85% of last years Club want to come out play some more…. That is just wonderful….  It is just great to have so many people playing .

Welcome to our most recent new member…  Patricia Riverroll, Ross McLeod, tomas a. walker

FINANCIAL REPORT:  Pat Page - brought good news… we don’t have any outstanding debts and we have $1700 in the bank…  Immediately there are about a million creative ways to spend it came up for discussion.  But cooler heads prevailed and there is discussion of an improved screen for our shows…

BUSINESS ITEMS:

Club Screen Options…  Bob Rogers -  spoke to the options available to us ( buy our own or rent from Parks or library).  He outlined the pro’s and con’s of each…. There was a lively discussion and the consensus seemed to be – yes let’s buy it  and it needs to be portable to travel with us--- but  ---  lets look a bit deeper and run some comparison tests….  So that will continue at the May meeting…  Thanks you guys for all of the research and analysis --- it is nice to have those techy folk.. bless them… from a technically challenged user…

Fundraising Idea:  Wendy Rosier – presented to the group a thought for consideration – she has been asked repeatedly for copies of the video show shows she produces which play at Harbour House and Lady Minto  --- people would like our taste of SaltSpring…

If you haven’t seen them drop into Lady Minto waiting room or Harbour House to see them… they are lovely island photographers by many of the members of the PhotoClub… they are really beautiful…

She put forward the idea of selling these as a fundraiser for the PhotoClub… there seemed to be a great deal of interest in the idea and … Of course - again no shortage of what to spend the funds on --- scholarships for members, youth or community in general for Photographically oriented educational experiences was one of the ideas… there were many others… all of them good and interesting to discuss…

Wendy will take the project another level and bring it to the membership again… and let’s see where it goes…  It is a wonderful opportunity to show off our Island and as an aside the Photography talent that is available here….   Thanks Wendy --- let’s do it…

The show will be at ArtSpring from June 27th to July 7th…  Curt has posted everything on the site --- all the requirements for registration and for hanging… the when’s where’s and how’s…. Come on out and let’s show the world what we can do….  “ Colour Management “---- Brad Grigor from Turning Point Arts Gallery and Studio in Ladysmith and also an active member of the Ladysmith Photo Club was our guest speaker.  His website is  www.turningpointarts.com.

Brad was discussing Colour Management  - the need for synchronizing the colour systems between:  your eye, your camera, your screen your printer, paper and inks… It was a fascinating presentation of the level of detail that has to be considered in each facet of the process – I really admire people who can do that and can think like that.  It was interesting and informative presentation...   Thanks  well done and thanks for coming to SSI Brad…

EVENING’S MEMBER’S SLIDE SHOW

Black & White Images

The images put forward were once again wonderful --- what a group of creative, thoughtful individuals… Some how being in black and white the images spoke in a softer wiser tones – they spoke of age, simplicity and majesty…  You have to go to the site to review or see for the first time the work of you fellow club members…  it is magic….  Well done all who submitted it was a beautiful show…
