When I took yesterdays's photo the click of the shutter above them caused them to scurry out a few yards - but then they swam back. It was interesting to catch them in so many diffrent poses

how ready they are to create apparent chaos at the drop of a hat, a click of the shutter.  a beautiful chaos.

My D300 has a relatively quiet shutter but more than the shutter they sensed my presence on the cliff above them and instinctively reacted. I knew they would do that and was ready to take the shot. I think that is a key in wildlife photos - knowing how the subjects will react and being prepared for that reaction. The mallards here have been very flighty when it comes to sensed presence - more so than any other of the many wild duck species that are here.
