I was having my wife read to me the name of the woodpecker from one of my birdbooks and I misunderstood her description. You (and she) are right. I described where I took the shot when I entered it - the bird was sitting not ten feet from me in my office window in the branches of a Hawthorne tree and I have several more good images in different poses but opted to show this one.

We usually see the Downy woodpecker here so this one is new for us. Incidentally, shortly after I took this A large Pileated woodpecker landed but I failed to have my camera ready in time.

What a good place to catch him between the trees and against the green.
