Monochromatic rather than b&w and the colour gives it a warmth that I'm certain the other wouldn't have had but perhaps detracts from the patterns the other might have emphasized.

Perfectly in keeping with the basic elements of a Japanese Garden which are a combination of: plants, water, rocks, and lines to create a tranquil effect.  Done!
