Photo Club Minutes

Opening: It was a Dark and Stormy night... a few hardy souls managed to swim their way in...  a small but significant group... Man was it ugly out there... Wendy has a new bell for calling order... it’s pretty cute... but who could get order with this group.... think herding cats, noisy cats... lovable cats...   Bigger Bell !!!!

 

New Members: no new members to announce but we welcomed Ann Holt to her first meeting... nice to meet you in person...   We are now at 110 members... which is a lot of photography happening on this little island...

 

Announcements

        

         Monday Coffee:  The lovely corner table at Penny’s on the Green (Golf Club) is full to brimming with camera nuts, photo talk, good breakfasts and lots of laughter and good company... Be sure to drop by...  

         Ross McLeod has been leading a pre-coffee shooting adventure for the early bird keeners..  they meet somewhere like downtown Ganges at 7:30’ish and go on a shooting spree... weather has been everything and has produced some interesting learning experiences and images...  watch for his announcements on the website....

 

         The website:  has been having hiccups for Wendy and she is straightening things out with Ning and is exploring some options.... Peter Freeman has volunteered to work with her on the website.. as soon as he is finished the house he is building (finished house on SSI never happens Peter)... so we are looking forward to his assistance... Thank you Peter much appreciated...

         Resource Page... Evelyn Smith will update on the website Resources page... have a look...  it is full of wonderful useful information about all sorts of Photography related things; matting, framing, expert help, coaching, reading materials, websites of interest....  check it out ... and add your sources too...

        

         Eclectic Visions 2016  (EV)... Jana Zachariou the chair of the EV committee gave a brief update...  reminding us that our entrance fee is due March 17th to confirm your place in the EV Show... There are 20 participants for this years show to date... we can accommodate a few more... so if you are holding back... Come on join the fun, it is well presented show at Gallery 8, well attended and well received and a great opportunity to share your best shots...

Our Student guest has been chosen and will be revealed when the paper work is complete... if you are interested contact Jana at janazachariou@hotmail.ca

 

         The Education Committee:  is driven by Curt Firestone and his merry team of bandits ( Ross McLoed, Doug Wahlston. Jana Zachariou and Simon Henson...) They have all sorts of surprises and delights in store for us... field trips, presentations from experts through to August or September... topics to preparing to show, framing and matting, software sessions, how to put together a show like an expert...  Wildlife photography.... so keep an eye on the site for what is going on... it promises to be an interesting and educational year...

 

         Club Publication: An off shoot of the Education team headed by Doug Walhston will be looking a publishing a Collection of SaltSpring images by the Club members... much like out DVD projects... this is seen possible product... an affordable book or SaltSpring images... of interest to the Real Estate Community, islanders to send to friends...   Doug will spearhead a group that will look at the costs, resources, logistics and such.... MCB volunteered to help... always full of ideas...  so stay tuned and keep an ear open....

 

         Boat Field Trip... Ross McLoed offered to take 5 people on a field trip by boat to one of nearby small Gulf islands... to view the wild flowers: the Fawn Lillies and Currants are in full bloom there right now... Needless to say he had a full boat immediately but has sworn to offer more opportunities in the future.... so stay tuned...   Thanks Ross... looking forward to it...

 

What’s Showing

         Country Grocer Café: Sylvia Beech has everything ship shape at the Café... a wonderful display of boats and fun on the waters of the West Coast... Drop by and have a look... they are beautiful...

 

         Fernwood Cafe:  has a beautiful show of houses with split personalities by Bill Underwood...   Bill uses a soft palette to capture the age and tone of these wonderful images... They depict houses, townhouses, duplexes which outwardly show the personalities of those found within... It is a lovely collection...  Venture to the far Northend for coffee and a treat as well as a feast for the eyes... enjoy....

 

         Harbour House:  Anna McColm is showing her fantastic images of the Wild West Coast... until March 31... she captures the power and wonder of the scenery, the wildlife as only an be found in our part of the world...  makes you want to grab a kayak and go there... it is so wild, rugged and beautiful...   Thanks Anna for sharing your images...

 

         Also  at Harbour House... April 1-30 “ In, Out, Up, Down and Through “ by Maggie Agiro and Margaret C. Benmore  show about Windows, Doors, Passageways & Stairs)...   Architectural Elements that allow access...  Our photography surveys these architectural elements of design that are used to interact with or allow access to spaces it includes images from around the world and across cultures... Opening reception Sat. April 2 11 am to 1pm... we would love to se you there... 

 

         Pemberton Holmes April 19th will see a new show grace the boardroom walls at Pemberton Holmes... These are image of SaltSpring as captured by...  Evelyn Smith and TBA

 

 

 

Educational Bit for the Evening.... Sunrises and Sunsets by Jana Zachariou...    well this dark and stormy night was full of beautiful sunsets and sunrises....  Jana gave us some useful checklists to prepare us to go hunting for these elusive images:  from clothing, to equipment, to filters... coffee, umbrellas, extra batteries and cards.... She shared some of her favourite island spots, seasons and post shoot tricks...    Thanks Jana it was fun and informative.... Now we are all going to go out there and challenge you ....   Though you are certainly the reigning Champ...

 

Evening Slide Show:  “ MACRO “  an interesting array of images appeared in Doug’s show... especially the opening Macro of Mac &Cheese... only Doug could do this... we had computer chips and bugs, not computer bugs, real bugs, micron’s and neurons... Plant life and birds.... Close ups of beach life, spiderwebs, tiny tiles from huge mosaics.... and floors of multi-coloured marble... ... Doug has posted the show on the website.... have a look there were some beautiful images... Enjoy...

Harbour House… 7:00 pm 

         The challenge for April meeting: Sunrise and Sunsets   after Jana’s presentation we were all inspired to rise to the challenge of capturing the sun doing it’s daily performance of coming up and going down...    The first challenge is getting up early enough for the sunrise ... Jana gave us lots of tips and hints to help us explore this range of images to take them out of the ordinary.... Go out and have fun with it...

 

         Editorial aside: If you have any comments, corrections or additions please feel free --- all help is welcome…

I would like to encourage all club members to take part in the conversations on the website --- they are interesting and endlessly informative…  Share your pictures with the club on the site – you know we all love to look at images and it would give us a chance to get to know a little bit about you …  let’s participate…

Marg,I am not clear on where you & Maggie are showing your images.  Otherwise, you always make the minutes fun!

Margaret, Simon is an esteemed presenter and educator.  He is not a member of the education committee.
