Have you ever seen the shadow from a water strider?
I am still trying to understand the physics of it - spindly legs creating totally round shadows where they touch the water surface.

Something new to me and another wonder to marvel at. Going to have to look up meniscus.
Yes. Thought of that. But I would have expected a meniscus to distort images - as a lens would. Why should it create such black shadows?
