Patience is the key to photograph these birds. They are very active diving and they really keep their distance from shore.

I was using the Nikon 55-200 zoom kit lens, with which I have shot many of my images, but these birds were about 500 yards away and I cut this shot out of the center of the photo at full size. I think if I made the image much smaller I might have a thumbnail. Also - I didn't mind the expanse of water with their ripples behind them because it is another example of the amazing views of the texture of the waters here - with the reflective coloring of an overcast sky.

I love the softness of this image Cliff - it conveys a tranquility that is quite beautiful :)

(About the cropping idea, I think it would emphasize the motion across the image, while leaving it as it is gives a nice feeling of floating, almost as if they were in mid-air.

I concur..a little crop would help focus the viewer.

Excellent reflection; motion and I love the "long hair".  Must be alternative lifestyle birds.
