The new Nikon 200-500 f/5.6! 4.5 stops of VR and relative light weight (5lb) makes for an outstanding hand-held telephoto. I've been able to get acceptably sharp pictures with it down to 1/25th @ 500mm

So I think I missed something somewhere. Which FX lens did you get? I'm looking... and this photo is certainly a good advertisement.
