I tried making everything greyscale except the red on the wingtips, but it felt a bit over-the-top.

Nice one. I like that you can see the eye and mouth parts as well as the wing colours. Always difficult to use available light and get a sufficient depth of field. I might have tried to close down a bit so that the far wing could completely be in focus. Of course, that means a lower shutter speed so there is a risk !

Butterflies are very difficult to get to stand still.

I bet you used a fast shutter speed.

The red wing tips make this image special.
