The new digital cameras are basically run by a small computer. The operating system and instructions as to what to do with the input from the buttons and the lens as well as how to store the information on a "card" is controlled by this small computer.
Improvements do happen and sometimes often. When a flaw or improvement had been noted/corrected the manufacturers usually send out a program that can be put on a blank "card" so that you can update the firmware. The blank card must be formatted in your camera to have the right structure for accepting the program from the manufacturer.
Google "updating firmware on camera" for your specific model and find out if there is any available. It is worth your time.
