Photo Club Minutes

June 8, 2016

 

Opening:  (approx. 20 good natured folks) already warmed up and no longer shy and reticent as the meeting was in full swing when Wendy again tried to call us to order… because of the EV15 debriefing... which had everyone talking ... 

New Members:  Colleen Barnes Horel, Marcia Jeanne and Elizabeth Dow… welcome to you all and are glad that you have found us…

 

Announcements:

         Eclectic Visions’15 – just finished the debriefing session prior to this meeting and the debriefing notes will be posted on the Club site…  generally it was a whopping success again this year, sales were much better, attendance was way up and all seemed to have a good time… well done all those that showed, helped out and worked on making it happen… what a wonderful team…   Those that attended voted unanimously to show at Gallery 8 next year if it is possible, Curt will talk to Razali next week sometime… so wish him luck…

 

         Thanks Photo Club – a letter has been received from GISS thanking the club for working with them on the mentoring program this year… it was very successful from the perspective of the school, the students and the mentors…  it is hoped that it will be continued and expanded next year… Thanks Wendy and Don for spearheading these projects…

 

         Photo Op Opportunity:  Firefighter Training – once again club members are invited to get up close and personal with firefighters practicing their skills… it is fun and exciting… If you are interested contact AJ George and he will take you through the process of gaining entry to the event… July 18 at GISS

 

         Cycle for Life Event:  July 25 & 26 - A ride in support of Hospice BC (and Hospice SSI) will have riders arriving at Vesuvius on Saturday, staying overnight at the Farmer's Institute Saturday night and departing on the 11:50 ferry at Fulford on Sunday morning.          Club Education Survey:  Curt Firestone presented a summary of his findings and discussions with regard to the Club’s Educational endeavours… people are keen to learn anything, no preference between educational and more entertaining events… 1 day workshops appeared to be popular, even with a modest fee attached…  people did not want workshops on Saturdays – they are just too many other things on Saturdays… could be even short series ( 2 or 3 sessions at most)

Technical camera, software and such workshops need to be balance with more design focused workshops (composition) working with colour, creativity…  well done Curt thanks for making some sense of our fondest wishes… 

 

         Lavender Festival:  Once again Saltspring is being blessed with the wonderful lavender festivies, the fields are in bloom and the opera is warmed up...  It will be an Italian based festival this year with lots and lots of colour, music and wonderful food…

Jacquelin Sutton has generously offered Photo Club members free admission to the festival to capture the action and atmosphere…

 

Shows:

       Pemberton Holmes: Bob Roger will be presenting his work here for the next couple of months so drop by and have a look… it is always a treat to see Bob’s work and you can buy a house at the same time...

         Country Grocer Café Gallery: Elehna de Sousa is showing “West Coast Birds” a lovely series of portraits of birds…  Elehna has a wonderful sense of colour and composition… stop and have a treat with her show… it is beautiful… until July 31

         Talia:   Judy McPhee is showing at this lovely coffee shop and her work is always worth at least a latte and goodies… enjoy… she is showing until August 5…  

         Embe’s:   Doug McMillin’s never ending ever-changing show is running continually in the coffee shop.  It is definitely worth dropping by to see just what our magical mystical Doug is up to --- guaranteed to surprise and delight you…

If you know of other shows in town… add them on to this blog or better yet post it on the event section of our website… Let us all know what you have found and enjoyed…. 

 

Educational Segment:    “Making Sharp Images”  Bob Rogers walked us through what he does to ensure that his images are sharp, crisp and clear when they are supposed to be… Bob has posted his presentation on the Club Site… so go and take a peek, he is full of great ideas – I especially like the one about tangling yourself up in your camera strap and leaning on a tree… it boggles the mind…

Oh yes don’t forget you lavender eye pillow to steady your camera.. No really…  go read the blog… you will be delighted to learn how to “Make Sharp Images” SaltSpring style… Thanks Bob, as always a treat for all of us…

Evening Show/Challenge:  “Dry” – timely indeed… man was it a dry show… Doug has posted the images on the website.. So if it isn’t dry enough for you right now… go see just how dry it can get… we are talking Death Valley, Artichokes, fire, dry grasses tassels, starfish and a birds nest riding a bike… yup it sure is dry…

Thanks Doug and all my proof readers... Curt you are right ...   201 was an Extraordinary meeting... we had split roasted lamb and grappa and we introduced cave painting technology as that night's education session... I remember it well, like it was yesterday... Cheers.. MCB
