TC affects AF speed and accuracy as it's reducing the usable light by (in this case with 1.4x) one full stop, bringing the 200-500 from f/5.6 to f/8 maximum.

That's correct Doug- Next time I go out with swallows in mind I'll be bringing some tape to create a makeshift secondary reticle for my left eye, as it's extremely difficult to follow their erratic flight path through just the viewfinder at 700mm haha. Will also try taking TC off if I can get close enough, just to squeeze as much AF performance as possible out of the D750.

AF--not auto-focus, I suspect? You can see his flight path below, such neat little birds, love them.
