Didn't like what the harsh light did to the grass, so dropped contrast there but that made for a washed out look. Used split toning to get a sepia feel

Then there's the relationship between dynamic range and DOF.
Often, when using the full reach of a zoom lens (in this case 500mm), with a wide open aperture (f4), the DOF is shallow thus creating a separation from the subject, and background. In doing this, the dynamic range or contrast tends to lighten in the background.
In this image, the aperture was stopped down to f8, allowing for more 'depth' to be in focus and adds to the overall contrast in that part of the image.
