I don't know how it was formed, though I think it was some seaweed or plant that stuck to the log and then the sun baked in the outline.  Later the plant dried up and fell off, though you can see some remnants at the bottom of the photo.

I keep looking at this trying to decide if a human had a hand in this. Either way it's beautiful.
