For all us animal lovers. This photo was taken in 2006 with my old 5mg Sony fixed lens. Roosevelt Elk live in north coastal California. Same area as the Redwoods.

I've seen these just outside the Redwood forest, where it says "Watch for elk". So we did and there they were, watching us, from a field. Just like these ones. I've also eaten a bit of one--best Shepherd's pie I've ever made. If you drive near Cowichan Lake you can run into herds of them, like cows in the middle of the road. They're big! And the bulls are impressively horned.

Why drive to California?  3000 on The Little Mainland (VI).  Their number in California is deminishing, yet they are easy to see there.  Also they are in the Olympics of Wshington State.
