Beyond the ordinary

I've been following the work of the French photographer Jean Fracois Rauzier for some years now. He creates very detailed photo-collage panoramas that you can navigate with the mouse or by pressing buttons.

Conservation/wildlife photography

Our guest speaker in April or May is Isabelle Groc.  More on her later.  In the meantime, she has asked if I would post those request for donation.

I am working on a new film project with the Wilderness Committee, called Toad People. We have launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds needed to finish the film, and we have a week left to meet our goal. Please take a look at the trailer and the campaign when you have a moment and see if you can share among your…

THE LAB: DECOY - A portrait session with a twist

A photograph is shaped more by the person behind the camera than by what's in front of it.
To prove this we invited six photographers to a portrait session with a twist. ‘Decoy’ is one of six experiments from The Lab, designed to shift creative thinking behind the lens.

Susan Huber Video

As those of you who were able to be at our last regular meeting know, Susan Huber gave us an inspirational presentation.  She is a teacher and sharer.  Here is a video of her in Finland teaching the use of large format film cameras.  The words in the video were written by Susan.  For those of us that are strictly into digital, a look back at film is an inspiration in of itself.  Photography has an interesting history.…

Congratulations Jana

Jana Zachariou won third place in the Ladysmith bi-annual art show in the digital section for her image: "Oneness With Nature".  Most club members only show on island; most club members do not enter judged competitions.   Jana is not most club members.  She took the chance.  And it paid off.  We are a very talented group of photographers and now one more member has shown her talent behind our island shores.

Jana shows her talent all the time on our web site.  Yesterday she…

Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery

What a night, 300 people packed the Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery for the Ladysmith fine Arts Show opening reception. It was amazing. All work is for sale. If you are a collector or lover of art this is the place to visit as there are some amazing art creations. In particular, some of the three dimensional pieces are simply fabulous. The show runs until the end of February.  As some of you already know Elehna de Sousa and I have few pieces in the show. However, if you can't…

Pierre introduced the new team who will help shape the Club in the future.

Simon Henson

Larry Citra

Maggie Vancik

Roger Brooks

Maureen Milburn

Ellen Vesterdal

Justene Tedder

Plus returning executive members:

Pat Page

Kahsia Hartwell

Wendy Rosier

Anna McColm

This group will infuse some new energy and direction into the Club. Feedback from club members indicates that people would like more interactive educational activities (workshops, classes, small field trips etc.) and maybe a schedule of educational opportunities ahead of time so that people can plan to attend.

The Victoria Camera Club has an external speaker every month and are willing to share their list of speakers so we can participate, at a cost of $5 a person. The club has funds to cover this at the moment. This would require using the  Zoom format (which has worked so well during this Pandemic).

Club meetings will resume in October, giving this new group time to work out their ideas for new directions.

Some people are cautious about in person meetings (because of health issues) and others are ready and able to jump back in. Maybe in person meetings and Zoom meetings can co-exist. Something to talk about.

Maureen has offered to look into a monthly newsletter with, possibly, more coverage than the website offers such as emails, using facebook etc.

Avril would like to see an improved use of the website: more posts, more comments, more helpful critiquing. We might need a refresher course to remind us how to give constructive feedback.

Doug has a show about Covid in September at the library -  in the Community Program Room. He will give a talk on September 7th at Noon. This will be previously unseen material, not the triptychs we have seen on the website.

Photosynthesis has a virtual show coming up, starting on August 31st. Some club members also belong to this photography group.

There is no theme yet for the photography challenge in October but when that is decided it will be communicated to everyone.
