Avril has a show at Fernwood cafe entitled "With a Twist" from Aug. 18 to Sept. 14 and has an opening reception on Sunday the 18th at 2 p.m.

Kahsia will be showing at Country Grocer in September.

They will want to see the photos before they go up. To show there, contact Gerda at 250-538-8686 or email her at gerda@saltspringwildcider.com.

Judy and Kahsia are organizing volunteers to help out with the photography section of this year's Fall Fair.
Our speakers were two eminent photographers from the stable of National Geographic and they were fascinating. Doug chose well and went through hours of watching to find Stephen Alvarez on “Set the scene: get close” and Jodi Cobb on “Gaining Trust”. Stephen is an adventure photographer. He talks about bad weather being a boon to photographers and about the need to set the scale sometimes with a less zoomed shot. Jodi is a rare female photographer for NG and has been able to shoot where no man would be allowed to go. She has photographed the life of geishas and Muslim women and was allowed to photograph in China before anyone else. There is an advantage to being female “and invisible”, she says. Thank you, Larry, for supplying movie night at the Photo Club and to Doug for setting it all up for us. Very inspiring.

Our September challenge will be a choice between the challenges that each of these photographers set at the end of their talks. You can choose between wide angle, close up, possibly adventure, probably action, and love and intimacy, close up, or just companionship. Close and close.

Our slide show was inspiring, too. Lots of great, would-be NatGeo shots, and a great deal of travel photography, of course.

September's speaker will be 17 year old Lucas Morton from Mill Bay. As well as showing us his impressive photographs, he will be discussing what young people feel about photography today and how we might attract more youthful members to the club. Should be interesting.

Maggie Argiro, who is in India, has sent us a note about Photoshelter, which has a directory of photo competitions worldwide with international judges. The website is photoshelter.com.

Doug is showing pictures this month at Country Grocer. He will put a sign up list on the website for other members who'd like to show there in alternate months.

Pierre gave us an update on Photofest. As well as the two big photo shows, our own Eclectic Visions and Photosynthesis, which will run concurrently this year between June 13th and 26th, there will be galleries and studios who will be featuring photography during those two weeks, and venues such as Fernwood cafe, who will pay a small fee to be included on the Photofest map and directory, and the website. If you'd like to feature your studio or other venue in the Photofest tour you will need to sign up for it as soon as possible. The deadline of January 31st will likely be extended for sign ups by a few weeks but early sign up is encouraged.

It was suggested to Dave, the owner of Fritz Cinema, that he could show feature length films on photography or photographers during the two weeks of Photofest. He was interested in participating. Judy, who is involved in the Salt Spring film festival in March, will look into any possibilities for suitable films that make come up through that. We could also approach Dave about showing our cds of seasonal photographs prior to the films.

The need for a publicist who is conversant with social media was discussed and Shauna volunteered for the job. She will be helped by Paul who is a journalist and will advise her on the writing side of things. Thank you both!

Shauna's first job will be to publicize the lobby show.

Pierre would like to know if everyone received two messages re this meeting. One was sent via Ning and the other using a private membership list of email addresses. Some did, some received the Ning email in their spam folders. The ideal would be for the Ning list to work for everyone so that constant updating isn't needed to the private list.

Pierre has suggested that when we know a month ahead who our guest speaker will be and the topic, that we use that same subject as our monthly photo challenge. Next month our speakers will be Danielle Acken and Aurelia Louvet, a food photographer and a food stylist, so the monthly challenge will be FOOD.

Pat reminded us that January is the month to pay our annual dues of $30. There is an envelope in Apple Photo where you can leave a cheque. If you're having difficulties, email Pat at patssi@shaw.ca.

Michael Wall will be showing at Faultline gallery in Grace Pt. Square, opening on Friday Jan. 11th.

Jana will not be organizing Eclectic Visions this year. We thank her very much for all her hard work over the past three years. Fifi, Jean and Pat have volunteered to form a committee to run it. Fifi will do food, Pat, money, and Jean coordination. (Since the meeting Jean has found she has travel plans that will interfere with coordination so someone else is needed to do that job. Any takers?) We will find out if Jana has a list of tasks to be done to help the new coordinator. Someone will need to approach Jason at Uptown Liquor re supplying the wine, servers, glasses and tables again this year. They have been more than generous in the past.

Pierre has set up a box at Country Grocer, #62 (I think), mid left side of the bank of boxes, in which to put our Country Grocer tapes for a 1% cash back from our purchases. Anna has taken on the task of adding them up and taking them in. Thanks Anna! Country Grocer contributes $130,000. annually to community organizations and we are very appreciative of their help in the past.

Pierre will meet with Country Grocer again in February to find out what our contribution from them will be this year for Eclectic Visions. The system has changed and they suggest using the money they give us to create our own trays of food, instead of having them prepare the trays at a far greater cost. Ross pointed out that tray preparation is a lot of work and that perhaps Food Safe certificates would be required but since members have traditionally brought their own contributions prepared in their own kitchens, that may not be an issue.

Fees of $20 for inclusion in the lobby show have not all been paid. They can be paid to Pat or Wendy.

Pierre will arrange for the club to do bagging at Country Grocer, hopefully in the spring, for which we will be paid.

Our speaker this month was Roger Brooks. He joined the club in December and Pierre grabbed him right away to speak on architectural photography, which he did for a living in Vancouver. He came from the UK in 1976 as a civil engineer, arrived in Vancouver in 1980 and by 1984 had given up engineering to turn professional photographer. Since he is an introvert, photographing buildings with not many people involved suited him perfectly. He showed us a wonderful selection of photos of both interior and exterior architecture in which lighting was a key element. It was truly inspiring. Thank you very much Roger!

The monthly slide show was an interesting array of our own takes on architecture.

Our Speaker

Bob welcomed Janet Dwyer, our speaker for the evening. Janet is an internationally respected and prize-winning scanographer, who has developed her personal form of photographic art using a flatbed scanner and objects from nature to create new realities, relationships and surreal combinations. She has had an extensive education in photography and has taught at many different institutions. She is also known as an excellent photographer of works of art, and has done so for Robert Bateman and the Royal B.C. Museum, among others. And her work has been in magazines and books from National Geographic to Macleans.

After the introduction Janet then took us for a look into her world. It was fascinating. She uses an ordinary 8 1/2 x 11 inch scanner, sometimes hung upside down, and a 44 inch printer to produce her works of art. The scanner's resolution is so much higher than that of a digital camera that she is able to blow her photographs up as large as she likes or her printer allows. She arranges natural objects on the bed of the scanner, scans them at low resolution until happy with her arrangement and then scans them at full resolution, a process which takes some time. She uses flowers, bones, nests, donated dead birds, living spiders, silk worms and anything else that calls to her to create her wonderful pieces. Deconstruction and decay often figure in her art. And lately flower bits and bugs, even fossilized fish, frozen in ice have, too.

Janet uses a black cotton velvet for some of her backgrounds, since she has taken the cover off her scanner to allow for depth in her work. She does a lot of dodging and burning afterwards to make up for overblown highlights. The files are huge, often 750 mb to 1 gigabyte. She cold mounts her photos on metal usually and uses 5 protective coats afterwards. She doesn't work with standard sizes but allows the pieces to dictate what size they should be.

The slides she showed us of her work were mind-blowing--beautiful and different and absorbing in their detail. Many thanks to you, Janet, for your wonderful talk.

We are invited to Janet's studio on Saturday Oct. 22nd, around noon. Her address is 234 Fairway Crescent, above St. Mary Lake.

The Slide Show

This month's challenge was black and white photography and the slide show was excellent. I could talk about it but it's better if you look at it on Doug McMillin's October slide show blog post. Well done, everyone.

Next Month's Challenge: Scanned images.
There were over 30 members attending the January meeting, with several new faces in the crowd (none of whose names I got. Welcome anyway!)

Chris Dixon ably chaired the meeting in his new post as Vice President, in Curt's absence.

Avril Kirby shared the results of the first meeting of the Eclectic Visions 2014 committee. Some points she covered:

1. This annual club show in the Artspring Galleries will run from Thurs. June 26 to Monday July 7, over 2 weekends, including the long Canada day weekend.

2. Cost will be $60 per entrant, the rest of the expenses will be covered by the club.

3. There will be a sign-up on the website, just as an intention to participate. All members will be notified of this. When the sign-up is closed and we know how many entrants we have, participants will be sent guidelines as to how many images of what size they can enter and a submission form.

4. $30 will be due at the April meeting, the other $30 at the May meeting. But Pat Page will gladly take the whole $60 up front in April. Please make your payments to her.

5. Five shrink wraps, of any images you like, not necessarily those you are showing, and 20 cards are allowed, for selling at the show, per participant. As they sell, they may be replaced.

6. All cards will be the same price. This will be discussed at a later meeting with participants of the show.

7. A numbering system on the backs of cards and shrink wraps will be used to ease accounting and sales records.

8. Our student participant this year, who shows for free, will likely come out of the new mentoring program with GISS.

9. In order to promote audience participation we will have a People's Choice Award. All entry tags will be numbered and an independent auditor will count votes. No prize, only glory.

There followed a discussion on To Theme or not to Theme. Different scenarios were presented eg. one themed room, the rest eclectic or 3 rooms, 3 themes and one all-encompassing theme for the entire show. Avril presented the thoughts of the committee, there was a good discussion and a vote and overwhelmingly, we are remaining completely eclectic and having NO Theme.

Anna McColm talked about a project presented to her by Pat Preston, at the library, consisting of a show of photos of some of the older, impactful women of Salt Spring, to be taken by women photographers. All photos will be printed and framed for us, only the images are needed. Any woman interested in participating should contact Anna at annagarika@hotmail.com. It was an interesting idea and one which got a lot of enthusiastic response. The show will be hung at the library in March.

Current shows around town: Bob Rogers, Country Grocer

Doug McMillin and Avril Kirby, Embe Bakery cafe

Avril Kirby, Roasting Company

Starting mid-Jan.-- Timmy Gibbon, Fernwood Cafe. Reception on Sunday 19th, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Our slide shows are now up and running at RoCo, as well as at Harbour House restaurant, Lady Minto and the Fritz Cinema.

2014 dues are due now--still a bargain at $15--and payable to Pat Page.

The photography workshop "Doors of Perception", put on by Simon Henson, Greg Klassen and Bill Gardam, all excellent photographers, will start on Sunday, January 12th, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the library, first come, first serve, spaces available for 50 participants, from the club and from the community. This is a year-long series of workshops consisting of a seminar one month and a look at and discussion of the images that participants have worked on using the ideas of the seminar the following month. This is a free workshop.

Our web-master, Ernie Westlund is retiring. Ernie has concerns about being the name on the site, should any litigation ever come out of photos posted to the website. And he has faithfully worked on it behind the scenes for a number of years. Our heartfelt thanks, Ernie, for all your hard work and dedication.

Bob Rogers has kindly volunteered to take over the job. Thank you, Bob.

Our guest speaker for the evening was John Denniston. His subject was Street Photography. His title for his own is "Peripheral Vision".

John comes at the subject from the point of view of a newspaper photographer, which he worked at for many years. For a full and interesting bio and philosophy of photography, take a look at his website at http://www.johndenniston.ca/index.html.

His first rule: Have a camera around your neck at all times.

There are different approaches to street photography. You can conceal a camera and "steal" an image. You can ask permission. You can take a photo deliberately when the subject knows he is being photographed. Each style has a different outcome.

John takes photos without permission. They have impact because they're real and candid.

John's second rule: Don't lurk after you have your shot. Snap and leave.

He walks down a street, shooting all the time, rarely standing still. He goes where he pleases, not where he's told, gets in close and takes photos without looking directly at people. He prefers to use a wide-angle lens at close range rather than a telephoto from a distance. In a crowd scene it's easy to take pictures.

Street photography is like a fashion show, full of variety and life. He takes photos all the time, of anything and everything, from people holding things to people running or crossing roads in the snow.

In other instances where he wants to get candid shots, of family, sports, interactions between people, social occasions, the people peripheral to the action, he tries to disappear. He steps back until he is forgotten by the subjects.

For John, photography is a record, telling others how we lived, and far more important than art.

He says he doesn't "make" pictures, he finds them.

When asked about privacy issues, John says he is reluctant to put his street photos into shows or on websites. "It's tricky." One gallery owner he talked to would not show street photos that were taken recently in Vancouver.

He says you have to know why you're taking pictures. It is an invasion of privacy and if someone wants to know what you're doing, you have to be able to explain. Nowadays we're all more aware of and can be more sensitive to being photographed.

But he still wouldn't ask permission in case they say "No".

Thank you, John, for that interesting look into your world.

And after that great presentation we had our slide show on the subject of "Texture". It was a fairly quiet show with more silent appreciation than chatter, but nonetheless, a great mix of photographs.

Timmy presented an interesting idea for a group project of a patchwork quilt-like collage of members' photos that are predominantly one colour. She will elaborate on her idea at a later meeting.

Next month's challenge will, of course, be Street Photography. For some ideas and a discussion of what this could look like to you, see Doug's blog post: http://ssphotog.ca/profiles/blogs/theme-challenge-street-photography.

Peter Paul Harnisch has posted a forum on the idea of separate photo critiqeing sessions and we will wait till he can present it in person at a meeting to hear what he has in mind and how he sees it working. It sounds like a useful learning tool for those of us who are not that confident in critiqueing other peoples' work in a helpful way.

Upcoming shows: Doug Wahlsten: Salt Spring Gallery from Oct. 18th to Nov. 1, with an opening reception on Friday, Oct. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The show is a closer look at nature, not macro but large.

Bob Rogers (and Ken Ketchum): lobby of Artspring for the month of November

Avril Kirby: Harbour House for the month of November. There will be a reception on Tuesday, Nov. 5th between 6 and 8 p.m. All welcome!

Slide Show-- Doug presented some examples of negative space and gave us an explanation of how important it is to a photograph. He talked about figure/ground (figure being the subject occupying positive space, ground being the background occupying negative space) and figure/ground reversal, as in the famous picture of a vase (or is it two faces?) In "The Last Supper" the V on Jesus' left seems to be an important bit of negative space and is reproduced in most takes on the Last Supper. It was an interesting talk and members felt they could have used it the month before we took on this challenge!

The slide show was great, as usual. Some of us struggled with the concept of negative space and others nailed it but it was a good learning tool for all of us, and the photos were excellent.

Points that came out of the slide show were:

1. Positive parts move towards you, negative move away.

2. The proportion of negative space in a photograph is important.

3. It's up to us to define our own spaces and figure out what they say in a picture.
:
(Did I get that right??)

Next Month: November's meeting will be a talk by a lawyer/photographer on the etiquette and legalities of taking photos of people. There will be no slide show, as this has been a hot topic and there is lots to discuss on this subject.

December's Challenge: Light (other ideas for challenges, perhaps to be used later-- Eyes, Pareidolia, Emotion)

Opening remarks: Bob Rogers chaired the meeting ably in Curt's absence. He led a discussion on how members chose to approach Jonesie's challenge to try something out of their comfort zone. Quite a number expressed discomfort at shooting people. (I know Margaret would have interjected something here but I'm not going to.)

Quite a number expressed discomfort at shooting people. (I know Margaret would have interjected something here but I'm not going to.)

Old Business: There is information now posted on site about the Miksang workshop running Jan. 12 and 13. All members interested in attending need to give a deposit of $25 towards the $50 entry fee to Pat Page before December 15.

Information is also posted on site about the lobby show at Artspring that will run throughout January. Anyone interested in participating should send their label information to Bob Rogers by Dec. 17. Please read the blogs for further information.

Wendy Rosier is compiling winter and festive photos for the ongoing slide shows at Lady Minto, Harbour House and the cinema. The deadline for contributions is Nov. 28. Dropbox is available to use if you have a lot to send to her or you can email her directly at wrosier@gmail.com to send just a few or for information on how to use Dropbox.

Avril Kirby would like to invite club members to the opening of her show, "A Part, Apart" at Harbour House on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. The exhibition will be running in the lobby and restaurant from Nov. 30 to Jan. 1.

Current shows: Jen Holmes at Barb's Buns, Nirmal Dryden at Penny's Pantry, Gregor Alan at TJ Beans, Doug McMillin and Avril Kirby at Embe Bakery.

New Business: A discussion was held on Jonesie's idea to use the Crofton Room at Harbour House for our meetings. The cost of $50 would be defrayed by members eating at the restaurant and keeping their receipts to show at the time of meeting. The advantages over using the portable are that chairs would not have to be hauled about, coffee and tea would be available, at a charge, there is climate control and a permanent photo display might be possible, on a rotating basis.

Wendy Rosier made the motion to try out the Harbour House location in December to ascertain the feasibility of using it on a permanent monthly basis. Seconded by Sylvia Beech. Voted on, passed. SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS!

Presentation: After a bit of technical wrangling with computers and projectors, Jonesie's slide show on stepping out of your comfort zone was shown on a laptop screen. "Get closer" was an appropriate message, but it referred to our subjects, not the screen. Maybe we'll get the chance to see the show full size at a later date. Thanks, Jonesie.

Slide Show: 44 images on the subject of "Adventurous Photography" were shown. This month it would have been difficult in some cases to guess who took what, which made it all the more interesting. Members discussed how they came to decide what to photograph or, in some cases, how to manipulate the images afterwards.

We were shown everything from mammary squashes to photographs taken by a dog who, I'm sure, has not paid his club dues yet, to skinny dipping sun saluters and eerie doll faces. The variety was wonderful and everyone stepped up to the plate to challenge themselves. Thanks, Doug, for handling the show every month for us.

Next Month: A presentation on critiquing will be given at the December meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 12. In light of that, the slide show theme will be--

"Images you would like to have critiqued."

This can include bad photos that you wonder if there is any hope for, photos you know you like for some reason but can't get quite right, or photos that you're proud of and you want to see if other people agree. So more or less anything goes, but be prepared to have your photos looked at objectively and to be open to some hopefully helpful suggestions.

See you at the Crofton room at Harbour House next month.

Please feel free to add any corrections or additions in the comment boxes.

An opportunity to take part in one of Salt Spring's best-loved photo shoots has been offered to us all this year. Gail Sjuberg, of Driftwood fame, has asked if anyone would like to participate in "A Day in the Life of Salt Spring" which, this year, has been thrown open to us commoners.

The rules are as follows:

Thanks for your interest in the Driftwood’s 2012 Day in the Life of Salt Spring Island project.

The idea behind the DIL publication is to depict island life and activities within a 24-hour period.

We will accept photos taken between the hours of 5 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, and 5 a.m. on Thursday, June 21 only.

Preference will be given to images that show people doing something — anything — the activity doesn’t have to be an extraordinary one, as opposed to beautiful photos of flowers, for example. A number of factors go into choosing the final photos to be published, including a desire to have people of all ages well represented, how it looks on the page with other photos and its shape.

Please limit submissions to a maximum of 10 photos.

Photos should be sent in 300 DPI (at approximately 8X12 inches, or around 1 MB in size) colour JPEG or TIFF format. If you feel a photo plays best in B&W, you can certainly send a B&W version.

You will need to provide cutline information, including photo subjects’ first and last names, and the exact time when the photo was taken.

Model release forms should be signed by photo subjects, and will be provided to photographers before the shoot day.

Please note that no payment is involved — just a bit of fame and fun!

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call me at 250-537-9933, extension 210, or send an email to news@gulfislandsdriftwood.com. I will be on holidays from June 2 to 15, but Sean McIntyre can field any questions you may have, and my email will be checked in my absence.

I was thinking on the way home from the meeting last night about ways to attract new members to the group, or just to get people to read my info sheet, and decided that some interesting statistics could help. What I need to know is;

How many are in the club now?

How old is our oldest member....and on the other end of the spectrum, how old are you, James?

How many years have you each been involved with photography, and as a really rough estimate, how many photos have you taken? I'm putting my personal total at about 30,000 and I have been snapping, semi-seriously, for 6 years.

Anything else you can suggest to include, please let me know, but quickly, as time is of the essence. Thanks, Avril
Memorytag:ssphotog.ning.com,2009-11-15:3859646:BlogPost:10262009-11-15T00:40:56.000ZAvril Kirbyhttps://ssphotog.ning.com/profile/AvrilKirby
Not exactly a photography subject but I'm planning on upgrading and taking RAW images, so imagine I will need more ram on my computer. Anyone know whether it's easy to install yourself, or know of someone good that can do it for me? How much more space does RAW take, anyway, than JPEG? Also, any suggestions on a good camera that I can grow into? Thinking about the Nikon D300. And what would be good lenses to start off with if I do go with that one?

Hello fellow photographers. I attended my first meeting of the club this month and really appreciated the format, how informal it was and what sort of comments were made on the photos that were being critiqued. Though I'm not very knowledgeable on the technical side I have an interest in learning all that stuff, with a view to getting an SLR camera and using it well. I learnt about the club on the Salt Spring community list (bless it!). For the last 5 years I've been using my photos to put out…
Hello fellow photographers. For the last 5 years I've been using my photos to put out a Salt Spring calendar, most years with a friend, but in 2008 by myself, and I also use them to make photo cards which I sell at the Saturday market and in various stores. Though I enjoy taking those more popular sorts of shots, I really like to experiment, too, and I have done quite a bit of photo-shopping (different program, though) and am happy to spend hours and hours at it, as my husband can attest. Lately I've worked on a black and white series called "The Monday night poker club", which I enjoyed just as much as the poker, though there were definitely some shots that worked better than others. Looking forward to the next meeting, and thank you all for being so welcoming to people who are not as knowledgeable as yourselves. Avril Kirby
