Thanks all. Off in oregon and grateful to find so many responses and opinions. This is a boy, actually, and a small piece of a large photo. When I get home I will post the original.

I composed a long comment about how I prefer the original to Doug's crop.  I like Doug's crop for reasons of symmetry measure, but the original, with that lighted fall of hair which Jen pointed out, has such a pleasing down pull to counter and anchor the upward outward gaze. Possibly my reasons are hogwash, but still I want to say that the eye often knows way more than the reason; over some of my many years I have learned to be suspicious of my own pp cropping, although who knows what that clever Avril may have already done in pp.
