Hi Doug --- that is the wonder of the work of Michelangelo, both his painting and his sculpture - he does this quite often - exaggerating a feature to make it look more realistic from afar - it is truly amazing when you look at the individual elements like this and think that can't work...  Then draw back and look at the whole -- and it is a masterpiece... The Sistine Chapel is full of examples of this.
