Photo Club Minutes Sept 14, 2016

Opening... Welcomed by Curt Firestone extraordinaire past president in is own style he scrabble to cover for Wendy who was lost on the way.... who then zoomed in in a knick of time to save the day... what a team...  about 22 people were in the rowdy crowd making Curt’s dance even more interesting... a lively crowd indeed... fun...

New Members... We welcomed new members and some new faces who might become new members... welcome to: Mindy Heppner, Leaf Lund, Don Clog who brings another cowboy hat to our collection of hatted dudes... and wonderful subculture in the club check them out...   Ron Hawkins, Douglas K. Fryett, Susan Davenport...   I think there were a couple of stranger scoping us out... but hopefully they had a wonderful time... and enjoyed Simon’s B& W presentation and of course our own excellent interactive Travel/BW slideshow... Come on out a play with us... You will have fun and meet some pretty amazing people with a wide range of skills they will happily share with you...

Visitor... We also had a very special warm welcome to our own Trudy Sloan who came to visit from Comox/Courteny... Trudy is an honorary Club member (for all of her hard in helping to birth the photo Club and feeding us at opening... )We welcome her anytime with open arms any time she is on the island... especially if she brings treats....

Education Team... Curt Firestone informed us that he is officially turning over the Education Co-ordinator role to Ross McLeod and his team... and boy do they have things lined up for us... we are going to be active participants and learn lots... they have wonderful plans... Brace yourselves... and come on out and learn stuff... it doesn’t hurt a bit... trust me... (lifelong learning resister, have whiplash from learning curves)... but I think their plans sound exciting...

Now Showing about the island...

County Grocer Cafe:  Elizabeth Dow is presenting a lovely cross section of her styles and subjects of interest.... Drop by and have coffee/treat with a friend and really look it what is she saying, what has she captured...

SaltSpring Gallery (on McPhilips) has a mixed media show by two extremely talented artists ( Mike Levy, photogrpaher and LeeAnn Norgard potter) with a wonderful high level of craftsmanship an presentation...  It is a beautiful show on many levels... Mike’s photography is always exceptional, but I think that this portfolio of work in truly exceptional... the whole concept and end products are just outstanding...  please drop by...  Bob Rogers also has a few of his pieces showing in the gallery so be sure to take a peek at them...

Fernwood Café is now showing works by me (MCB) Street Art is a collection of international graffiti and shop windows... enjoy with a cup of something and one of Jen’s special treats...

The Club Seasonal DVD has now been finalized by Judy McPhee who as taken over from Wendy Rosier... Judy has done a magical job with our images once again while she was learning the ropes from Wendy... Thanks Judy and we are all looking forward to seeing the final product...  The blood letting and emergency waiting at Lady Minto is so much more interesting and less stressful with our slide shows... everyone tells me ... Thanks all for your contributions...   Judy is now going to be calling for a winter production... so sift through your stuff and send her winter gems...  Judy will be sending out an email with the specifics very soon...   thanks Judy... nice to have you working with us...

ArtSpring... Bernadette Mertens-McAllister... will be posting a notice for ArtSpring’s celebration of Arts & Crafts... she is looking for demonstrators and exhibitors... so watch the notices on the website...

Coming Opportunities to Show...  don’t forget that the club is booked to hang an Island Greetings show at Fernwood again this year... It is our opportunity to send out love and wishes for peace to our friends, visitors and neighbours on the island ...

While you are digging through your winter shots for Judy McPhees Winter DVD production... pull out a few  glitz seasonal to print up for the Island Greetings Show at Fernwood... Then we will have a Opening get together for coffee and treats to celebrate it on the Sunday afternoon...

Educational Session...  Black and White Photography by our very own Simon Henson... What a wonderful presentation... Simon showed us that Black and White is so much more that just the lack of colour... it is also an element of design in it’s own right...  It would be wonderful if Simon could present his slides/notes on the Blog as my note taking in the dark was somewhat limited and the old memory is’t what she used to be... He had so many interesting ideas and points to consider... It really was a great presentation and gave us lots to think about...   Simon will also be running a session at Burgoyne Bay Barn... 9:30-11 am September 24th...  If the weather is iffy so much the better and we will be sheltered while we play... Simon suggest a tripod might add to the fun...   This is to help us work with the B&W concepts and considerations that he presented...    ( note... this is to be an new feature of the Educational presentations ... an opportunity 2 weeks later to practice what we have learned in a hands-on session... great idea guys)...   see you in the Barn rain or shine...

The evening slide show... theme... Travel...    well that certainly opened the floodgates with an international flare... pictures from everywhere... with a few B&W’s thrown in for fun by people who were ahead of their time...(that is next month all).. it was all good and fun... Doug has posted the show on the website so that you can see and enjoy it all over again... Thanks Doug the master of weaving our work into a wonderful show...  it always makes us look so good and I love hearing the back-stories... keep them coming folks...

Challenge for October meeting... well it is Black and White of course...   Simon Henson gave a great talk on Black & White photography with a concise description of the elements of design that make a good photo when colour is removed from the equation.  He emphasized trying to see in Black and White rather than just removing colour from an image as an exercise to create better B&W photos.   So here is the challenge: shooting any subject in Black and White be prepared to tell us how you shot it, how and why.  Here is opportunity to strut you stuff and show us what you can do... what you have learned ...  have fun and play with it... take it to the limit...

Next meeting:  October 12... 7pm... Harbour House...

Any mistakes, misspellings, bad grammar and forgotten details are all mine... feel free to add on or correct in the comments section... prize for those who add to the minutes in anyway...

Cheers... MCB
