Presentation:      SHADOWS & REFLECTIONS      by  Michael Wall

Mr. Wall worked as an industrial designer for 40 years. He has been photographing continuously during that time. Among many interests in imagery have been shadows and  reflections. He showed some scans of B&W prints he made 34 years ago using 35mm SLR and Rolleiflex cameras:

Imaginary Landscape                                      1984

Over the years he has enjoyed seeking out reflective surfaces - glass, water bodies and often uses mirrors and reflective polyester films.
One series of images, explored over several years was taken at a neighbourhood ephemeral pond:

Iced Pond                                                            2013

In May and June of 2014 he drove across Canada and back taking photographs every day. Several examples of shadows and reflections were shown:

One series of images, explored over several years was taken at a neighbourhood ephemeral pond:

Meniscus II                                                       2012

He enjoys the striped reflections created by surface tension around plant stems.
He shoots in digital colour and develops in Lightroom - either in colour or B&W.
Some images are deliberately reminiscent of Japanese calligraphic painting:

Pond in SW Saskatchewan                                            2014

Last year he had a solo exhibition, at Mahon Hall, of photographs on the theme of the the painting Six Persimmons by the 13th Century Chinese Buddhist monk Mu Ch'i.
Several of these involved shadows and reflections. He showed a few examples:

The Bridge Across                                                                                                              2015

Over the last few years he has been experimenting with images which are not clearly focused, but are created to suggest paint on canvas abstractons.

He prefers to use natural light when possible.
His current camera is an Olympus OMD E-M1 MkII
